On April 19, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez assumed office as Cuba’s third President from Fidel Castro’s brother and successor Raul Castro, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new one in Latin America.

Ambassador Cordovés: Born at Artemisa in 1948. Has a degree in English language from University of Havana (1979).Spent over a dozen years in Germany, first as Third Secretary (1968-72), as Minister Counsellor (1991-95) and as Ambassador (2000-2015). Also worked in Havana in the International Relations Department of the Cuban Communist Party’s Central Committee in various capacities. Speaks Spanish, English and German. Is married, has two children.


José Luis Paniagua: Head of EFE in New Delhi since 2014. Bornin Salamanca, Spain, in 1974.Has a Masters in International Relations and Communication from the University Complutense of Madrid and a Law Degree from University of Salamanca. Began working at Spanish News Agency EFE in 2000, spent most of his career in Latin America reporting from Argentina, Paraguay, Cuba, Panama, and Venezuela. He has covered the political crises in Bolivia, coup in Honduras, earthquake in Haiti, Fidel Castro’s illness, Hugo Chavez’s death and Nicolas Maduro’s assumption of office.
