ABOUT FCC SOUTH ASIA

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia is a group of more than 700 journalists and photographers covering India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Afghanistan and Tibet.

New members are always welcome. The club was started by “Foreign” correspondents, or those who work for news outlets outside of the region. However, we welcome journalists from Indian newspapers, magazines, television channels and news portals. In addition to journalists, we also admit diplomats, lawyers, and people dealing with the media from non-governmental organizations and companies as Associate Members.

As India’s economy has boomed in recent years, and tensions continued to grip Afghanistan and other neighboring areas, the FCC has become an important meeting point for far-flung travelling journalists to reconnect and recharge. The club has also substantially expanded what it offers to members, to include more press conferences, sports match screenings, book launches and other cultural events.

A WINTER THAT BURNED DELHI

6 pm, June 14, 2024

INDIA'S SOLAR WARRIOR

6 pm, June 7, 2024

On June 7, the FCC hosted Prof Chetan Singh Solanki of IIT Bombay for a talk titled: India’s Solar Warrior. Prof Solanki is on an 11-year long expedition (2020-2030) across India on board a self-designed Solar Bus to promote the use of solar energy. The talk was hosted by the FCC to mark the World Environment Day and to raise awareness of how one can contribute to saving the environment.

It was a very interesting discussion where the audience had many questions. Prof Solanki pointed out various ways in which each individual can make a positive impact in the area o climate change. For instance, he pointed out that simple things like not ironing clothes can help save a lot of energy which translates into carbon dioxide in the air. He called it the Wrinkles Acche hai (WAH) initiative. Later many also got the chance to see his bus which was parked just outside the FCC and helped many to understand the many ways in which we can live with less in life.

On June 14, the FCC screened the documentary film titled: A Winter that Burned Delhi (Silent Screams and Broken Promises of 1984) made by Rahul Milind. The film, at one hour long, provides a great understating of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as well as the political context of those days.

It was a packed audience that attended the screening of the movie

which has also won an award at the 16th Jaipur International Film Festival 2014.

There was a panel discussion on the movie and the many topics related to it at the end of the screening. Apart from Rahul Milind, the panellists included Manoj Mitta, a senior journalist who has written on the 1984 riots extensively, and Advocate HS Phoolka joined via zoom. Phoolka has been a very active and vocal voice fighting for justice for the victims of the 1984 riots and it was an engaging discussion where the audience participated for over an hour.

On June 23, the FCC held a workshop: AI for Journalists. It was a one-day hands on training workshop held by Sunil Prabhakar, who is also the Trainer for UN staff in AI technologies. It was an informative and very useful workshop which introduced journalists to AI and then went on to discuss the concepts of Data Journalism and AI, guidelines for transparent and responsible use of AI in journalism, among other such topics. It was a well-attended workshop. The FCC plans to hold more such workshops.

On June 29, the FCC hosted the next round of the monthly Quiz. It was a great evening filled with fun where a total of eight teams participated which had questions from the world of arts to sports to science. The audience members were also active participants in the quiz.

The quiz master was senior journalist Srinjoy Choudhary, a veteran of about a thousand quiz competitions either as quiz master or participant, and author of a few quiz books too. The Ambassador of Ukraine to India Dr. Oleksandr Polishchuk and the Ambassador of Norway to India, May-Elin Stener were the chief guests and distributed the prizes to the winners.

All in all, it was a great event which is being held on the last Saturday of every month.

It was sponsored by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation which provided lovely prizes for the winners.

The next quiz will be held on July 27.
