ABOUT FCC SOUTH ASIA

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia is a group of more than 700 journalists and photographers covering India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Afghanistan and Tibet.

New members are always welcome. The club was started by “Foreign” correspondents, or those who work for news outlets outside of the region. However, we welcome journalists from Indian newspapers, magazines, television channels and news portals. In addition to journalists, we also admit diplomats, lawyers, and people dealing with the media from non-governmental organizations and companies as Associate Members.

As India’s economy has boomed in recent years, and tensions continued to grip Afghanistan and other neighboring areas, the FCC has become an important meeting point for far-flung travelling journalists to reconnect and recharge. The club has also substantially expanded what it offers to members, to include more press conferences, sports match screenings, book launches and other cultural events.

REMAKING HISTORY

6 pm, January 19, 2024

FCC hosts an interaction with author Afsar Mohammad on his book REMAKING HISTORY, the FCC Monthly Quiz, a Consultation Workshop on Green Manifesto, and a discussion with visiting Yangon journalist Aye Chan on What is going on in Myanmar?

On Jan 19, the FCC hosted author Afsar Mohammad, and there was an engaging discussion on his latest book, 'Remaking History: 1948 Police Action and the Muslims of Hyderabad'. The book discusses how with the birth of the new nation-states of India and Pakistan, the citizens of the princely state of Hyderabad underwent an unravelling of an intense political conflict between the Union government of India and the local ruler, the Nizam of Hyderabad.

The author discussed how Hyderabad was caught in a struggle as the Union Government of India deployed the central army while the Nizam struggled with his idea of an independent 'Muslim state'. The author answered many of the questions raised by the audience and it was an interesting discussion that lasted for more than an hour.

On Jan 20, the FCC hosted the fifth round of the monthly Quiz. It was a great evening filled with fun. A total of eight teams participated. The quiz had questions from the world of arts to sports to science. The audience members were also active participants in the quiz.

The quiz master was senior journalist Srinjoy Choudhary, a veteran of
about a thousand quiz competitions either as quiz master or participant, and author of four quiz books, too. The Ambassador of Greece to India Aliki Koutsomitopoulou was the chief guest, and also participated in the quiz.

All in all, it was a great event which is being held on the last Saturday of every month.

It was sponsored by Mr. Jerry’s cocktails and Highbury Classic who provided the winners with lovely prizes.

The next quiz will be held on Feb 24.

On Jan 30, the FCC hosted a Consultation Workshop on 'Green Manifesto: A direction for Political Parties in India in the context of General Elections in 2024.' The Welcome Address was delivered by Gautam Lahiri, President of Press Club of India and by K. Laxma Reddy from Council for Green Revolution. The workshop was presided over by S. Venkat Narayan, President of The Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia.

The workshop saw a very interesting line-up of speakers and an active participation by the audience. K. Purushotham Reddy, eminent environmentalist who was also the Chief Guest, spoke on the 'Necessity of Green Manifesto.' This was followed by Dr. Narasimha Reddy, who spoke on the 'Green Manifesto: Content and Context.'

Professor L. Pushpa Kumar, from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi
spoke after this as did R. Dileep Reddy, Former Commissioner, RTI-AP.

He is also a senior editor. Rajendra Ravi of the People’s Resource Centre in New Delhi was also one of the speakers at the workshop.

Aneel Hegde, who is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, was also present at the workshop.

On Jan 30, the FCC hosted U Aye Chan, a journalist from Myanmar who gave a talk on 'What is going on in Myanmar?' It was a rare opportunity to listen first-hand to what is going on in the state of Myanmar where journalists have a hard time reporting. It was a session that lasted over one hour and the questions varied from the veracity of reports emerging from Myanmar of the militant uprising to the question of when Myanmar plans on holding elections.

The journalist made a presentation where he talked about the dangers he has faced while reporting in Myanmar, He also gave detailed answers regarding the use of social media in his country, the government's role and allegations that media is not allowed freedom in Myanmar. Overall, it was an interesting and educative look into Myanmar.
