ABOUT FCC SOUTH ASIA

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia is a group of more than 700 journalists and photographers covering India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Afghanistan and Tibet.

New members are always welcome. The club was started by “Foreign” correspondents, or those who work for news outlets outside of the region. However, we welcome journalists from Indian newspapers, magazines, television channels and news portals. In addition to journalists, we also admit diplomats, lawyers, and people dealing with the media from non-governmental organizations and companies as Associate Members.

As India’s economy has boomed in recent years, and tensions continued to grip Afghanistan and other neighboring areas, the FCC has become an important meeting point for far-flung travelling journalists to reconnect and recharge. The club has also substantially expanded what it offers to members, to include more press conferences, sports match screenings, book launches and other cultural events.

On March 8, the FCC celebrated International Women’s Day and invited all women members of the club to meet and celebrate. The event was to celebrate the contributions made by the women members to the club and in various walks of life.

On March 11, the FCC hosted journalist and author VK Cherian for a discussion on his book, Celluloid to Digital (India’s Film Society Movement). Joining the discussion was Saibal Chatterjee. It was an interesting take on the history of film movement in India.
On March 18, the FCC hosted a book discussion on Unboxing Bengaluru (The City of New Beginnings). Co-authors Malini Goyal and Prashanth Prakash were joined by Kris Gopalkrishnan, Chairman Axilor Ventures and co-Founder Infosys, and Mohandas Pai, Chairman 3one4 Capital & Co-Founder and Chairman of Aarin Capital.

It was a very interesting discussion on what makes Bengaluru tick and the many positives of the city which has resulted in people from all over the country going and settling there. There were questions on the water
scarcity issue in the city to its being called a concrete jungle at times.

On March 19, the FCC hosted a discussion on What Next in Myanmar? The panellists included Soe Mint, Editor-in-Chief of Mizzima Media Group, and New Ni Win, an asylum seeker from Myanmar currently living in India. They were joined in conversation with Angshuman Choudhury, an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi. There were many questions about the various events taking place within Myanmar, especially the rebel groups fighting the military junta and the present state of affairs within the country.

On March 19, the FCC hosted a farewell reception for Aminul Islam Mirja, BSS New Delhi Bureau Chief and Governing Council (GC) member of the Club.

Aminul has been an esteemed member of the FCC's elected Governing Council (GC)for the last three terms. To bid farewell on his completion of his tenure in New Delhi, a reception was held at the club premises. Many members of the GC were present on the occasion to wish Aminul well.

Speaking on the occasion, the FCC President S Venkat Narayan wished Aminul success in his future endeavours and also noted his contributions to the FCC. A plaque honouring Aminul was presented to him.

On March 22, the FCC hosted a discussion on The Fall of Kabul by journalist and author Nayanima Basu. Former Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Jayant Prasad was present as a discussant. It was a full house. Ambassadors Rajiv Bhatia, Gautam Mukhopadhyaya and Manjeev Puri added their thoughts to the interaction.

On March 30, the FCC hosted the seventh round of the monthly Quiz. A total of eight teams participated. The Quiz had questions from the world of arts to sports to science. The audience members were also active participants in the quiz.

The quiz master was senior journalist Srinjoy Choudhary, a veteran of about a thousand quiz competitions either as quiz master or participant, and author of four quiz books, too. Ambassador of Estonia to India Marje Luup was the chief guest, and handed prizes to the winners.

All in all, it was a great event which is being held on the last Saturday of every month.

It was sponsored by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation who provided the winners with lovely prizes.

The next quiz is on April 27.
